Razzle Dazzle:
Measuring 17 inches long and weighing in at ten pounds, the Toshiba Satellite P505D-S8007 won’t be easy to carry around and will give a sore arm if you do so. We doubt if this notebook will fit in to any laptop backpacks. Fortunately the battery in the back doesn’t bulge. It has a glossy plastic “sonic black” chassis along with a “fusion finish”. The bottom of the notebook is matte dull black. The looks of this laptop are the same as multimedia centric high-end Qosmio laptops by Toshiba. The looks are impressive, just like Qosmio but the performance is really poor.
Inside Dope:
Big desktop replacement laptops have always been tempting because they give you mobility. Hence lots of manufacturers are making such devices. But in order to pull the price down, the competitors are starting to compromise on hardware components which defeat the whole purpose of a ‘desktop replacement’. Notebooks in this category aren’t supposed to care much about the weight; they put in all the hardware that is usually found in desktop computers.

Toshiba Satellite P505D-S8007 is an example of such a computer. The previous installment, P505-S8980 was better than this. It came out in 2009 and was powered by Intel Core 2 Duo chip. This notebook has AMD Turion II chip along with ATI graphics card, the performance is subpar and doesn’t justify the high price tag of $749. If you put in $50 more, you can get a faster Core i1 chip and a good Nvidia graphics card. Asus U50F-RBBAG05 costs $649 and the 16 inch notebook has a Core i3 chip. This will give you a lighter and better experience. The Toshiba laptop is behind competition in price, battery life, performance and graphics. So why would you buy this laptop?
Under the screen, the Toshiba Satellite P505D-S8007 looks attractive. The keyboard is big and it due to the big size of the keyboard. Typing is comfortable but we were concerned with the glossy finish which attracted a lot of fingerprints while typing. The touch pad is tiny and will get to you when you scroll long pages. Underneath the touch pad, there are two massive mouse buttons. The trackpad is not the best but we won’t complain much about it since this is a desktop replacement. You will probably use a USB mouse.
The 18.4 inch screen of the Toshiba Satellite P505D-S8007 is the most attractive feature of this laptop. It gives resolution of 1,680×945 pixels, we would have preferred full HD resolution which would have made this laptop a better entertainer. The screen is big enough for such a resolution and we won’t forgive Toshiba for this. The Harmon kardon speaker set gave good sound quality, the combination of volume and bass was pleasing.
On the left side of the keyboard, there is a media control bar which is made up of eight buttons from playback to power modes/screen settings. The buttons are touch sensitive and give out a hideous sound when used. We have an issue with this, the beeps are irritating. This can be turned off in the settings but we don’t know why Toshiba put it there in the first place.
On the bright side, the Toshiba Satellite P505D-S8007 has good connection options which include FireWire, ExpressCard and eSATA port. We were shocked (literally) with the missing HDMI port. Such big laptops should have one. Such shortcomings will make this laptop tough to compete with other competitors.
AMD Turion II processor could handle HD clips well but when we tried to stream 480p Hulu videos, there were a few hiccups. Such problems are acceptable in a Netbook but such a big sized notebook is expected to handle these tasks very easily. This 18 inch monster can’t do things that it is made for.
Toshiba Satellite P505D-S8007 comes with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 which gives you more gaming power than the standard integrated Intel graphics chip. We tested this notebook for gaming, and got 19.5 fps for Unreal Tournament III when played at resolution of 1280×768 pixels. Gaming isn’t comfortable if the fps goes below 30. We also played Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood in the same resolution with graphics set to medium. The notebook couldn’t handle it comfortably and felt as if it will go down on its knees if put through intense action.
When tested for battery life, the Toshiba Satellite P505D-S8007 had juice for 1 hour and 43 minutes and this is no typo. Battery life is really small and we don’t recommend this notebook if you are going to stay away from the plug for too long.
Toshiba Satellite P505D-S8007 comes with a one year warranty that covers labor and parts. 24-7 toll free support over the phone is also accessible. You can visit the manufacturer’s Website for driver downloads and online knowledge base. Toshiba, like other manufacturers, also offer extended warranty but they are costly and hence we don’t recommend them.
Nitty Gritty:
Looks can be deceiving, if you need an example check out Toshiba Satellite P505D-S8007. You expect stellar performance from this 18 inch monster but you will be disappointed with everything inside.
