HP Mini 210 review – Inexpensive Netbook

Sum and Substance:
Thumbs Up:
Plenty of options for configuration, inexpensive, great touch pad, capable of playing HD videos.
Thumbs Down:
Nothing in particular.
The Whiz Kid Speaks:
HP Mini 210 is powered by a Intel Atom N450 processor, memory installed is 1 GB RAM, and for storage there is 250 GB hard disk. The Netbook starts at $299 and with the $384 model, you get Broadcom Crystal HD video accelerator. Display resolution with the accelerator is 1366×768 pixels.
Razzle Dazzle:
We always love it when manufacturers offer options for lid colors but mostly they come at a price. The default color is the cheapest. Our review unit had a “silver crystal” color on the lid which looked bland. Color options include black, blue or red and they will cost you an extra $20. The chassis of this Netbook is quite similar to that of Mini 110. Aesthetic’s highlights are narrow, long body, long central screen hinges, lightly curved lid edges and rounded corners.
Inside Dope:
HP’s business Netbooks have always been one of our favorites because of their versatility. HP Mini 210 is a consumer side device though and you will love the low starting price. Intrinsically speaking, this Netbook is just a make over from the previous HP Mini 110 that we saw last year.

There are some new offerings in this laptop though, one of them being the Intel’s latest Atom N450 chip. Another welcome change is that the mouse button which were on the sides of the trackpad in Mini 110 have been moved to the standard position below the trackpad. Options for configuration include Broadcom Crystal HD video accelerator for better high definition (HD) video playback, but when it comes to streaming HD video online, the performance is subpar.
The touch pad has been changed and the keyboard is still the same comfortable one, which we saw in its predecessor. So typing here won’t be much of a problem. Starting in at $299, the hardware inside is the same that you will find in competitors Asus, Dell, or Acer products. So the competition is really stiff here. If you are willing to spend more, for $384, you get better resolution of 1366×768 pixels and a HD video accelerator, which makes it a good deal.
The keyboard of the HP Mini 210 has island like keys just like HP Mini 5102 and 5101 models, the buttons are flat, large and the space between them is adequate which makes typing easy. The important keys such as Tab and Shift are well sized. Some times they are too tiny which is a turn off. The touch pad design too is borrowed from HP’s Envy series. The buttons of the mouse are built in to the lower right and left pad corners and the all of the pad depresses when you click, just like a MacBook. Once, again we must thank HP for placing the button below instead of on the sides.
The display of the HP Mini 210 is 10.1 inches big and has a display resolution of 1366×768 pixels which is getting more popular over the previously seen 1024×768 pixels. Bigger resolution gives you more screen resolution and its also useful if you are for HD videos. We also liked the edge-to-edge sheet of glass over the display even though it makes the surface reflective and glossy.
HP Mini 210 come with 802.11n Wi-Fi which is not unexpected in a Netbook. Configuration options include choice of Windows 7 starter or XP, bigger 250 gig 7200 rpm hard disk, and Broadcom Crystal HD for $35. Two components cannot be changed: 1 GB of RAM and Intel Atom N450 chip.
There is not much difference in the internal hardware when it comes to Netbooks so most of them deliver similar performance. Netbooks with HD chips will of course, deliver better performance in movies but other than that, rest all stays the same. Just like most Netbooks, the HP Mini 210 is just for basic tasks like Web surfing and word processing applications.
When it comes to video acceleration, full-screen 1080p and 720p videos were great, just like Dell Mini 10. If you intend to play Flash video through Hulu or YouTube, you will have to put in the new Flash 10.1 beta 3 player. Also make sure you have Broadcom’s latest drivers.
We did upgrade to the new Flash version and then played 720p YouTube and 480p Hulu videos. They were watchable and smooth but there were some hiccups. Frame-skipping and stutter was apparent during video playback.
When tested for battery life, HP Mini 210 ran for a little over four and half hours in our video playback battery drain tests. The Netbook is powered by a six cell battery and the battery life is pretty decent.
HP Mini 210 comes with a one year warranty for labor and parts. Other support includes 24-7 toll free support over the phone. You can visit the manufacturer’s Website for driver downloads and online knowledge base.
Nitty Gritty:
We would recommend the HP Mini 210 for basic tasks and for HD video viewing. We didn’t have any problems with this Netbook and we think this is a great device.
